Day Camp

So there are reportedly a bunch of New Years options this year, with parties in Seattle and elsewhere. At this point, you have Tuesday, Lark, Gator, Jav, Fish, and Meredith hanging out in Mount Hermon at Lark's place for December 30 & 31 & January 1. We would love to see anyone who wants to party in MH. The itinerary isn't yet set but we'll likely be doing some day trips to San Jose or San Francisco while enjoying fine dining and drinks in the evening.

Became the full time Youth Pastor at High Street Community Church, in Santa Cruz
Got Engaged to the love of my life in February 09
Bought a house in Scotts Valley Aug 28th 09
And at the End of September we will be married!

So in short Life is good. Very Good! I am happy, blessed and have a full plate!

Yep. You guessed it. The stock market crashed hard enough that my firm was losing close to 80k a month in revenue. Now I'm 25 minutes from Kel working for my boss' friend in Porterville. I'm managing a mini-storage. I'm seriously. God is hilarious. I'm having th time of my life; and, other than freaking out from having to sleep in the apartment on the premesis, I love my job. I manage accounts and tally late fees then take long breaks on a golf cart cleaning the ever-dusty garage-like units. I get to carry a walkie talkie and a load of keys as well as a dustpan and two brooms. I feel important.

It's so awesome! God is taking care of Kel and I's needs as well as our desires to be closer and serve together in a youth group and be closer for marriage counseling. It's great to watch God do a dance of sorts with our lives and see how it all fits together so far. I'd love to elaborate on what God is doing and how we're trying to interpret it if you guys ever want to hear. Also, I'd love to hear from you but I don't have internet, so please call! So, you may have heard rumors and/or Facebook thingees about Kel and I (Spiff)

I know this pic doesn't do us any justice, but with the lack of technology and internet accessibility in our relationship, Kel and I can finally say the words we've wanted to: "WE'RE ENGAGED!"

We love you guys so much and we're sorry that it took so long to sign in to the blog. We're now focusing our efforts on figuring a wedding plan that can incorporate all of you guys without having to ditch out on our blood relatives! Maybe a 08 DC Dance? We'll keep you posted on that. If you ever have any questions, ask Skitch, our PR guy - he loves long, late night talks.

Anyways, we love all of you guys and wish that we kept in better touch - right now it's just a matter of me not wanting to see a computer screen after a full workday and not having a digital camera to catlogue what's going on. Hope you are all having a fun and challenging Fall. I know how interesting it can be trying to make loans work when school has started, or taking a semester off, or changing friends and landscapes. I was taking some quiet time and found myself doing a retro-viewing of the Blog. I don't know if anyone reads this anymore but if you do I would just like to tell you how amazing the time I spent with you was. Day Camp was a huge deal for me for most of my life. I loved the smell of the Redwoods, the goldfish crackers with friends, the lanyards.... Wow.

I want to thank you all for your patience as I grew. Man we had fun. There were highs (post 4.01.2005) and lows (post 4.04.2006) just to name two of them. We all made many friends, dated some, married others...Wow.

I know you all have things that you would have never had if not for Day Camp. Hell, Fidget's and Burt's kids wouldn't even exist! To name some of mine:

1. I would have never gone to school at Bethany.
2. I would have never found my love for Video.
3. I would have never found my love for my major (Communication).
4. I would have never have lived in the Redwoods.
5. I would never have met DeeDee, and in effect been set up on a blind date with an amazing woman.

Just to name a very few...Wow.

We got married. That's all.

Okay that isn't all. This is my first summer off MH's payroll, the first summer that all of Day Camp's counselors started in years after mine. My involvement on this blog has drifted. I don't plan to organize or attend New Year's this year.

I'm really glad Tuesday & I set this thing up small, that we could meet each attendant at the dock in Avalon and have a gift basket and note waiting for each of them in their rooms. No one came from high school. No one came from college. I didn't mind that.

But it sucked a little that we didn't invite Day Camp, that the people who surrounded us when this thing first happened weren't there, though it was pretty awesome my entire groomman lineup was Day Camp Mafiosi.

I want you people to know I thought a lot about you on July 19. We thought a lot about you.

so i am super lame for still posting a counselor pic...but for the life of me i can't find the CD their on so ya'll will just have to use you imagination. Anyway...summer is flying by and things are going great! some fun/disturbing/interesting things that have been happening...

-Pondy and one Fountain staff member contracted the "norwalk virus" JEMS week....so since then we have to wear plastic gloves for serve ourselves in staff dining and sanitize the kids hands @ straight n quite line contests, before snack, and after activity....we are all walking around with big bottles of hand sanitizer ALL the time and smell like rubbing alcohal...

-Pranks have slowly begun to trickle around...Upper Aspen bathrooms got filled with packing peanuts, Dash's set of "perfect push-ups" got stolen, Mine and Munchkin's beds' got stolen, the top have of Carl the DC maniquin ended up suspended in a canoe above the boat house and Finally.....EVERY PAIR OF JACK PEARSONS SUSPENDERS WERE STOLEN!!!!!!!! wtf. the left and ransom note and a pink belt for him to wear until they were returned...he turned the pink belt into a pair of suspenders.

-Retreat to Monteray was last weekend and it was lots of fun and went smoothly and while it was no lake house only driving 45 minutes was incredible.

-The most disturbing/funniest bible study skit i have ever seen happened this week...Bro vs Maverick in "Day Camp's Next Top Modal"....Maverick was a girl with lots of chest hair and a beard and Bro was just...well, Bro....todays final walk off had us rolling on the floor.

overall it's been a good summer so far...lots of new hoops to jump through but that's nothing new. If you haven't come to see us, come...and to all of you who have come by to hang out it has been so amazing to see you! keep praying for out health because that is one throne in our side that we just can't seem to get out. Love you guys!

hey friends!

my church vintage faith is opening a coffee, art and music lounge called 'the abbey' and i'm a part time barista there this summer. on saturday july 19th there will be a grand opening from 9am to 9pm. check out the poster or the website abbeylounge.org for more details. unfortunately i won't be able to make it, but it promises to be a great day with delicious coffee and rockin music. the best part is that after we have opened, we will have new "beyond sunday" hours, officially open to the public. it's a pretty sweet location, right in front of a major UC bus stop, so we're praying for many to come through our doors and feel welcome at the church.

if you are unable to come, please pray for saturday, and definitely stop by another time if you're in the area.

Day Camp 2008....

well guys...this first week has been crazy in ways that none of my previous training weeks have ever been! The new theme around Mount Hermon is "unity" which means that on top of all of the normal training week madness morning and evening meetings were added to the schedule to promote that unity among the staff-they are also trying to promote famiy unity among the confrees which means a new Sunday nite opener instead of program that includes ALL the campers (adult, high school, day camp age, etc). So DC was given the task of performing "we're all in this together" for the opener! So despite long hours in meetings, long hours dancing, and all the rest of the usual training week activities WE MADE IT!

Day Camp looks AwEsOmE! It's the Acme props closet which means anvils, TNT, bombs, caution tape,TONS of boxes full of crazy acme props!, a tornado-in-a-box that is coming out of its box! some crazy wildcats that have been released! and lots of other fun looney cartoon stuff! If you get a chance please come and see it! it is super fun an funky!

The dance is also pretty incredible...i am so proud of them all....if you want the chance to see bro pretending to be zac efron (or i think troy bolton in the movies case) or Dash being the metro-theatre-obsessed friend DEFINATLY come by some sunday nite...it is WELL worth it. After dress rehersal Thursday nite it was described as "an explosiong of glitter"...i don't think i can put it any better than that.

Now the most fun and important part...the new staff is incredible! they dove right into a training week that ran the most entergetic of us ragged and worked so hard and are going to be great counselors! i'll get a picture up ASAP but until then heres the run down of staff...Gidget-craft director, maverick:dash:Bro:myself-team leaders, skitch:banjo:dutch:pixie:slider:salsa:smiles-returners! who are all amazing...AND drumroll please the new guys!!! Clutch, yuke, and coach! and the new girls! munckin, grommit, freckles, and sprout(whom bro has in brotherly love dubbed "prune"....huh) Anyways....like i said before:picture asap.

So theres update numero uno....please be praying for us and the campers and that we are just radiantly shining God's incredible love to all the kids we come in contact with this summer! With all the changes around here we will definatly be on our toes all the time! And come by and check DC and us out when you're in the neighborhood! because we are going to be having an explosively good time!!! Love you all!

Hey guys-this has been kind of a crazy day and I'd just really appreciate it if you guys could be praying for somethings and my family.
-My cousins and his wife (Thad and Mandi) went into the hospital on Friday because she was going into labor...finally this morning after some very very poor decisions made by her midwives a docter had to step in-joyfully they have a healthy baby boy but Mandi almost died of blood loss, her veins collapsed and miraculously they found one they were able to find a vein they could tranfuse into and she is okay but definatly still in need of lots and lots of pray.
-My sister-in-laws father was up at their cabins in the mountain fishing etc. He was by himself but he checks in with the park rangers every morning so they know he's okay. He didn't check in Sunday, Monday or this morning and the park rangers went to look for him at his cabin and he's not there. They are currently searching the area but don't know if he took off on foot of on a 4-wheeler, what could have happened, etc. So prays they he is found and okay would be so great.
Basically it's just a really hectic time for my family, lots of good things are happening (a sister graduating next weekend, a brother getting married in august, etc) but all of this is kind of stressful and with all this scary things piled on top it's just kind of hard right now. So prayers are appreciated and needed! thanks guys! miss you all and hopefully will see you this summer when you work or come to visit DC 08!

PRAYER for Steven Curtis Chapman's family

hey y'all... this is a sad post unfortunately. Yesterday Steven Curtis Chapman's youngest adopted daughter, maria, was hit in their own driveway by one of their cars. it was late at night, and somehow she wasn't seen playing in the driveway. it was a terrible accident.
she was in critical condition for a short while before she died. She just didn't make it. The chapman's are family friends of ours and this story is heartbreaking for us and many other friends and family to fathom.

Prayer and thoughts are needed for the Chapman family and would be appreciated.

Chris Love Rocks Chapel!!!

Ok, I know I'm going to sound egocentric here. But I just hosted a chapel at my school and to say the least I ROCKED IT!! I hit on issues that needed to be hit on in an insightful way and was told right after by the campus pastor that I should frame my notes..

Afterward, I was told on three separate occasions that mine was the best chapel all year! Not semester mind you, YEAR! I am on fire today!!! Halla DCM Halla!!!

Hey guys!

I've been thinking about how excited I am for those of you who will be gearing up for another Summer and those that will be added to the family. I would love to hear an update of how everybody is doing, and I don't care if it takes a lot of typing!

Here, I'll go first. Life has been on pins and needles as I prepare to start paying the 100k that Kel and I owe in loans (She'll be back at Pondy this Summer FYI). I haven’t known where I’ll go and what I’ll do. Let me back up.

I came back to San Diego after Staff Banquet with one semester left at PLNU. I killed it, but I couldn’t find an internship with anybody, until Merrill Lynch got curious. I ended up working for the two most profitable Financial Advisors in San Diego. It was more pressure than I’m used to. I was like the Devil wears Prada. Long story short, they offered me a job when I graduated and I investigated the offer ($$$) but prayed about it and turned it down. I was bummed to say no to such a crazy opportunity.

After all that, I decided to go back to my school to say ‘thank you’ to the professor that had tipped Merrill Lynch to me. He wanted me to meet a guy he thought I would get along with, which happened to be a money manager for Merrill Lynch. He ‘grows’ the money for the very same FA’s I worked for at ML and then sends it back to ML. He tests out at genius level and he is a corky Christian like Bob Russell. Anyways, he flew me and Kelly up to Folsom where he does business. After meeting the other three guys in the office and meeting his wife, we prayed and parted ways. He loved us and called me this past week and gave me a job working with him.

It’s my dream job. It’s finance but from a Christian perspective. I can’t wait. The guys and their families are just about 5 years older than me and they all live on the same street and hang out and lead Bible studies together and BBQ with their little kids. It’s cute, but they’re managing over 300 million between them, so part of my job will be finding where to give back to the community.

I am ecstatic. Kelly wanted to live in the Sacramento area, and here we are figuring out living situations in the nice part of Sac and with an employer that cares more about Kelly’s well-being than anyone I’ve ever met. All in all, it has been a tough year but God is blessing us more than we can handle right now, and all we can do is tell others how good He is. There’s much more, having to do with our faith and all that stuff, if you have any questions, call me or Kel. We’d love to talk and catch up! I miss all of you, my brothers and sisters.

P.S. The Wallen kids are coming down next weekend to hang out with Kel and I! Whoo-hoo!

Hi everyone-

I hope you all are doing well. I thought that I would pass along a important announcement to everyone who has worked at Day Camp and that is that Mount Hermon has decided they are going to eliminate the Human Resource Director position, which means that Bob Russell is no longer going to be part of Mount Hermon. Bob, Lisa, Bill Fernald and the interns all meet yesterday where Bob revealed this news and then during a staff wide breakfast the news was revealed to everyone. Obviously this has been very hard on the intern staff because Bob was the one running the program and because most of us worked so closely with him. I was pretty shaken up yesterday and am still struggling today.

The reason for this decision, as it was explained to us by Roger Williams today and by Bob yesterday, is based on the need to cut financial expenses. Out of all the "General Administrative Expenses" Roger (I think he was the one who had to make this decision) felt that the Human Resource Director position was the one that made the most sense to elliminate.

Bob brought so much to the table, whether it was working with summer staff or interns. I feel it is rare to find someone like him who can be a boss and a friend with so many people so easily. He was a mentor and friend to me and so many others. As someone who understands business and the need to cut costs it is impossible to place a dollar value on Bob because of everything he brings to the table. Sorry that I'm rambling. Just know that this decision was done with lots of prayer and thought and that it wasn't a easy one to make.

Bob has interviewed at three different places, two in Santa Cruz area and one San Francisco and he is waiting to hear back from them. He is mostly likely going to be at Mount Hermon for the next couple of months unless his new job, if and when he gets hired, wants him there earlier. He will not be part of Summer Staff this summer. Ron and Jackie Demolar are going to be more involved this summer and are stepping in for now for recruiting and interviewing. Brandon (Mr. Crabs who is the HR intern) is going to be doing more and exactly how everything is going to be brake down. I do know there isn't a long term plan to hire anyone else or restablish that position.

Anyway, I'm burn't out on talking about this and I just wanted to pass this along to you guys. Hope you are all well. You can Pray for Bob and the staff. I feel by Bob leaving he is going to be able to minister to many more people and no doubt God has a plan for him. We just have to trust him.

so just a little DC memory for you all since summer is quickly approaching and will still have some school and work to get through first. Friday i was baby sitting my nephew, he wanted to sing a song...so i began do a VERY VERY loud and exuberant version of the chicken with one leg lawn chant...when i was done i turned around and my brother had snuck into the room with a video camera and brought my mom and sister in law with him...now my mom who most of you have met walks around singing "oh my i'm aaaaaa chicken with one leg....." it's funny and embarassing and now there is video of me making this terrible squwacking noise that will probably end up on youtube at some point! love you and miss you all so so much! (and if any of you can mentally picture my mom doing that lawn chant i promise you will be laughing out loud)

SOOOOOO today i started school up again at Belmont University! CRAZAAY.

for all of you who knew of the quitting school situation, terrible fights with roommate over the phone, and other traumatic experiences (DC 2007), the Lord came through, like he always does! whoo!

i've got class all five days a week with plenty of extra time on tues and thurs, plus a tap class on MWF... horaay for dancing! i love it! the only bad part about it is that i have a 8am class MWF... sociology.

the only OTHER bad part is that i still don't find a "yearnin' for learnin'" in myself. i know it's my first day back, but i'm bummed that i'm not all gung ho...

well i love you guys alot and wanted you to know what was goin on in banjo's exciting life! haha yea...

just send some prayers my way, and ya'll continue to update me and everyone else about your prayer requests and praises! i would love to pray for you all!

Thank you so much for your immense hospitality over New Years. Despite the intense messes, constant loud volume, and occasional pee splatters on the bathroom floor, you all remained sane and happy to host...so thank you again and again. : ) And thanks to all who organized meals and activities too! It was so great to be there! I can't wait to re-unite again with all you day-campers this coming summer! (Lord willing, of course!)

While at new years 2008 one DC'er will have there consciousness placed inside your body. Your consciousness will go dormant for 1 year. On new years 2009 you will gain control over your body again with all the memories, benefits, and consequences from having said person possess your body.

Gator teaches - you all know that - and by all accounts he's pretty good at it too. What he's just as good at - and what a smaller percentage of us know - is writing about his job. Gator has a blog - link in the sidebar, but also right here - where he does all kinds of education & design related things. You can get a far clearer picture of what it's about by reading it than I can paint telling you about it. What you won't get out of simply reading his blog, and what Gator is either a) too modest to tell you about or b) too busy designing a massive graphic blog post to more effectively tell you about (if the latter's the case, sorry boy-o), is that he's nominated for some pretty nifty awards.

The edublog awards are to the edublogosphere (duh) what the Oscars are to Hollywood. And Gator has a real shot at winning a couple of them. So what you should do, and what you should tell your friends to do, is this: go vote dy/dan for Best New Edublog and Best Individual Edublog. Retardedly, Gator didn't make final cut for "Best Educational Use of Video/Visual." Even if you're not a regular reader of dy/dan, know that Gator's pretty much the smartest, most interesting, and most dedicated teacher in the edublogosphere and that he definitely deserves our support.

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to let you all know that Ali (Snaps) and I (Jayber), along with our friend Miriam (you may remember her as Pixie before this past summer) have started a bit of a project. We like to call it Penelopea. We have a blog where we post things that we like and that we find interesting and inspiring, and we also have a little store on Etsy.com where we sell things that we've made. Right now on our Etsy site you can find some Christmas ornaments shaped like ice cream cones and cupcakes, as well as some sock animals!
