A VERY SAD DAY

Hi everyone-

I hope you all are doing well. I thought that I would pass along a important announcement to everyone who has worked at Day Camp and that is that Mount Hermon has decided they are going to eliminate the Human Resource Director position, which means that Bob Russell is no longer going to be part of Mount Hermon. Bob, Lisa, Bill Fernald and the interns all meet yesterday where Bob revealed this news and then during a staff wide breakfast the news was revealed to everyone. Obviously this has been very hard on the intern staff because Bob was the one running the program and because most of us worked so closely with him. I was pretty shaken up yesterday and am still struggling today.

The reason for this decision, as it was explained to us by Roger Williams today and by Bob yesterday, is based on the need to cut financial expenses. Out of all the "General Administrative Expenses" Roger (I think he was the one who had to make this decision) felt that the Human Resource Director position was the one that made the most sense to elliminate.

Bob brought so much to the table, whether it was working with summer staff or interns. I feel it is rare to find someone like him who can be a boss and a friend with so many people so easily. He was a mentor and friend to me and so many others. As someone who understands business and the need to cut costs it is impossible to place a dollar value on Bob because of everything he brings to the table. Sorry that I'm rambling. Just know that this decision was done with lots of prayer and thought and that it wasn't a easy one to make.

Bob has interviewed at three different places, two in Santa Cruz area and one San Francisco and he is waiting to hear back from them. He is mostly likely going to be at Mount Hermon for the next couple of months unless his new job, if and when he gets hired, wants him there earlier. He will not be part of Summer Staff this summer. Ron and Jackie Demolar are going to be more involved this summer and are stepping in for now for recruiting and interviewing. Brandon (Mr. Crabs who is the HR intern) is going to be doing more and exactly how everything is going to be brake down. I do know there isn't a long term plan to hire anyone else or restablish that position.

Anyway, I'm burn't out on talking about this and I just wanted to pass this along to you guys. Hope you are all well. You can Pray for Bob and the staff. I feel by Bob leaving he is going to be able to minister to many more people and no doubt God has a plan for him. We just have to trust him.

I didnt know Bob like a lot of others do, but what I DO know....I LOVE and I will miss him and miss knowing that he is up in that little red house. Sad news, but like you said Jason, wherever else he goes...those new people will undoubtedly be extremely blessed.

Sad day! I'm going to need some coffee or something in order to get myself out of this depression. I was just telling someone how much I loved Bob. I don't know that summer staff will be the same!

I know I really appreciated Bob's ear at 7 in the morning.

I guess we can just be thankful that we got to work with him.

I am right there with you Frodo. you know, the one thing I loved about Bob was that he treated you like family, Going to miss the coffee, soccer games on TV and the talks. No, this is not the end, I am going to hunt him down!

If you guys haven't done so, I think we should pray for him. This has to be hard and scary for him.

i was just thinking the same thing spidey-can we do some kind of massive DC thankyou for everything? i don't know what...but i know we have some super creative people here...so i dunno i really feel like we should give him something to tell him how much he's meant to use and that we will miss him and feel privileged to have gotten to work with him...throw some ideas around and maybe we can get organized

i agree. jon & spidey. well...step 1...i think we should all flood Bob's email inbox, voicemail, mailbox, living room (if we can get there)...and let him know how much we appreciate him and how much he has impacted each of our lives...

what if we all mailed letters on the same day. from each of us individually from the DC family....with perhaps, if possible, a picture of us and bob and let him know how much we will miss him and that we are praying for him. it'd be simple enough for us to coordinate the day...and yeah, so things might arrive a day or 2 apart, but that would be so great him to go in and have his p.o. box filled with letters and pictures from us.

throwin' it out there.

somebody run with it.

My heart too rests heavy.

Today after Bob talked at staff meeting I ran into Jackie, and 20 min later sat in Bob's office.

His wall of staff memories, he has already taken down. which sat in a nice pile on his desk. It was hard to see.

This news is harder than I thought. Bob is sad...but has a good outlook. Such a man of God. We laughed (even some of that deep shoulder laugh, that if you have seen you know what I am talking about), and there where a few moments where tears almost came as I heard the sincerity in his voice.

I told Bob I would if he wanted, plan a huge prank in his honor! He chuckled, and said he didn't want to know about it...ha ha. JK.

His Heart is and always has been so filled with Compassion for all of the staffs. Its reflected in the way each of the three camps, have always believed that they are the favorite, because he does indeed love well, and laugh well everywhere he goes.

I agree we need to do something. Agreed. I will be happy to Help plan or carry out any plan we choose as a local.

I wonder.

I love the letter writing thing. Would you all want to mail me letters and pictures, and I could compile it in a book to give to Bob from DC staff? But I am also satisfied with All of us sending letters at the same time! Such a good idea Montana!! love ya!

I would need help as to contact as Many people that you know who served. Shoot Bob has been here since 95? I think. He deserves something Special.

ps. I asked Jackie if they where having anything in his honor. She said she wanted something, and would keep us posted.

Pray for Jackie and Ron as well. She teared up a few times while we talked...Its tough for all.

Been Praying all day...And I'll keep praying.

i'll never forget the way bob was willing to interview me (3 times for 3 sequential summers!!) and put up with my nagging about wanting to be on day camp staff. he once wrote to me, "there's no such thing as being too tenacious." :) he's awesome. though trusting the big Plan, i'm sad, just like all of you.
i would love to write a letter! have we decided on sending to muppet to create a book vs. sending them all to bob? i vote just to bob-- for some reason that just sounds like a lot of fun, like harry potter receiving all of his hogwarts acceptance letters.

..bracing myself for the harry potter jokes...

i LOVE the book idea, and include people from more than just our summers. mup, i'll help in any way i can to contact old summer staffers, or whatever. While i think overflowing his mailbox would be cool, I love that it could be a little more permanent for him to take with him in the future. someone, put up an address, mup, yours or otherwise!
